Josie Mullins – aka, “The Cute One,” is a Cartaret County native. She was raised on good music and good guitars by a multi-talented musical family. With skills taught to her by her mother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins and family pets, she formed a series of cover bands in middle school through high school. Her first band was initially named Josie and the Pussycats, but quickly had to change that to Abstract Shadows when a suit and haircut from Archie Comics came calling, brandishing a “cease and desist” order.
In high school, Josie began her studies in classical guitar. She took the skills learned in high school with her to Greensboro College and later to East Carolina, where she minored in classical guitar. It was in college that she first took up the piano. Upon graduating, she returned to Carteret County and has performed with various groups, duos and in a solo capacity for over 30 years. Some of the bands in which she has been a member include Footloose, Southern Style, Forest Run, Deja Groove and Conch Stew.
Possessing a soulful, sultry voice, Josie is a multi-instrumentalist, equally at home on both guitar and keyboard. She has recently taken up the triangle and hopes to convince the boys to allow her to play a triangle solo in Sweet Home Alabama. She has an energetic stage presence and enjoys performing for audiences of all ages. Josie’s musical influences include Sade, Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd, Charo (Google her!), Dire Straits and Jimmy Buffett.
Josie plays a Fender Stratocaster, Korg Keyboard and Fender and Peavey amps.
